What is the Student Visa in Spain

The Student Visa is granted to foreign nationals authorized to remain in Spain for more than 90 calendar days for the purpose of carrying out educational or training activities.

This includes:

  1. Higher education studies at a recognized institution in Spain, within a full-time program leading to an official degree
  2. Post-compulsory secondary education at an authorized center, within a full-time program leading to a recognized diploma
  3. Participation in student mobility programs at officially recognized educational or scientific institutions
  4. Volunteering services for non-profit organizations, where activities are unpaid (except for reimbursement of expenses or pocket money)
  5. Training activities, including:
  •  Foreign language teaching assistant roles in registered Spanish educational centers
  •  Language courses in Spanish or co-official languages, taught in person at accredited centers recognized by Instituto Cervantes
  • Preparatory courses for exams required to access specialized healthcare training positions
  • Training programs leading to certification of technical aptitude or professional qualification
  • Full training programs at authorized centers leading to professional certificates under the vocational training system (grade C, levels 2 and 3)

Requirements to apply for a Student Visa in Spain

These are requirements for Student Visa in Spain applicants:
  • You can apply through two main routes:
  • From your home country (Consulate)
  • Applications must be submitted at the Spanish Consulate in your country of origin or legal residence
  • At least 2 months before the start of your studies
  • From within Spain (as a tourist)
  • Applications can be submitted online while in Spain, but only in certain cases, and At least 2 months before the start of your studies

At least 2 months before the expiration of your current legal status

  • The duration corresponds to the length of your studies
  • Higher education at a recognized institution
  • Post-secondary education programs
  • Student mobility programs
  • Language courses at accredited centers (Instituto Cervantes approved)
  • Professional training or certification programs
  • Volunteer programs with non-profit organizations
  • You must demonstrate enough financial resources to support yourself during your stay.
  • For 2026 (based on IPREM): Main applicant: approximately €8,400 per year

Family members:
75% of IPREM for the first family member
50% for each additional member

Financial proof may include:

Bank statements, proof of income or financial sponsorship

  • Private or public health insurance with full coverage in Spain is required.
  • You must provide an official admission letter from your educational institution, along with proof of enrollment or payment.
  • If your stay exceeds 6 months:
  • Criminal record certificate (legalized/apostilled and translated)
    Medical certificate confirming good health
